There are some people you meet that force you to cancel all further meetings because you enjoy talking to that person too much. That’s how it felt when I met Jesse Johnson. We were giddy with laughter, jokes and excitement as we figured each other out via Zoom. Then we Zoomed again. Yet the icing on the cake was when we got to spend 1.5 hours driving a typical 25 minute drive in LA rush hour; it was there that we really got to know each other. It was at the event that I saw Jesse come alive. She transformed into the teacher of her past and mystical figure of her future – captivating the audience with her wisdom, actionable advice and energy. Needless to say we stayed an extra hour at the event so individuals could get more of Jesse! Learn more about Jesse’s journey from inner city school teacher to 7-figure earner and coach, plus the mindset and grit that took her there.
SDS: The idea of making 7 figures leaves me breathless. How did you go from an inner city math teacher to making 7 figures as a coach?
JESSE JOHNSON: It started with wanting more. I wanted more impact, more integration of my spiritual, creative and professional lives. I wanted more freedom. So I went searching, and I ended up finding and hiring my first coach. Through our work, I realized that I wanted to be the owner of my own business – a thought that had never occurred to me before.
From there, I took it step by step. I did everything that my coach told me to do and was very uncomfortable making sales calls and being in this new role of business owner, CEO and boss. There were many things that challenged me. And I just kept putting one foot in front of the other in front of the other.
About nine months into working on my business, I saw the possibility of having a 7-figure coaching business. I didn’t know you could do that, and once I knew it was possible, I wanted to do it myself! I wanted to see what I was capable of; I wanted to see what God wanted to do through me. Finding the edge of my own understanding of how much money I could make ended up being a very powerful tool for me to raise my own consciousness and really step into my power.
In July of 2016, I decided I would make 7 figures in one year. About a year later, in August 2017, I had my first six figure month. In February 2018, I celebrated my first 7 figure year. Along the way, what persisted and kept me moving was my desire to see what I was capable of, my willingness to take action in the face of discomfort and my ability to keep my eye on the ball.
SDS: You’re not a normal coach, you’re more like a spiritual guru meets life sherpa. How do you work with your clients to help them level up?
JJ: It’s true, I’m not like other coaches. I like to work fast and I’m driven by the very concrete desires of my clients. When we initially meet, and then over and over again, I ask them: what do you really want? What are we doing this for? Why are we here? What do you want to create? What do you want to change? That becomes our destination. The strategy is in service to that destination, that desire.
So my first question to them is, “What do you want?” My second question is, “What are you going to do to get there?” And then my work is really just about supporting them in taking the action – which is inevitably very uncomfortable and scary for them – so that they can step into this new version of themselves.
I know that we can all do, be and have anything we want. As soon as my clients tell me what they want, I believe they can do it and oftentimes see how they can do it. That helps us move very quickly up the mountain of their own vision.
SDS: We’re living in a time where nothing feels normal, especially the economy. Do you have any tips on how to handle the fluctuation of our bank accounts and any mindset practices we can instill into our lives?
JJ: Spiritual teachers, coaches, healers and entrepreneurs are more necessary now, not less. There is therefore more opportunity now, not less, to serve, transform, grow and expand your business – while making more money and helping more people. As strange as these times are, the challenges we are facing are not that different than any other time. We always have fluctuations in our bank accounts. We always have the opportunity to get scared when things look a little tricky and run for cover.
This time of quarantine is turning up the contrast on what’s always going on – which is helpful because we can more easily see what our actual issues are. The issue right now is not scarcity; it’s never scarcity. There’s always more than enough. The question is, are you stepping into your own belief that there is enough, or are you coming up with reasons why you can’t succeed? Truly every human being struggles with this, so be merciful and compassionate with yourself. Stay curious with yourself about what’s arising and lean in!
SDS: At our last event you talked about the benefits of wealth, yet so many people fear wealth and what it can cause them to be/do. Can you tell us your thoughts on wealth and the bigger effects in the world?
JJ: Everyone has wealth right now. No matter how much is in your bank account, we all have a wealth of energy. We all have a wealth of wisdom. We all have a wealth of mastery. We all have a wealth of understanding. We all have a wealth of love. We all have a wealth of potential. We all have a wealth of the opportunity to contribute.
The game changing question isn’t “Is wealth good or bad?” but rather “What do I want to do with the wealth I have, and the wealth I will create?” Wealth of any kind is the gathering of energy, and we individually get to decide how this energy moves in our lives – both where it goes and how it comes in. Money is not inherently good or bad. Wealth is not inherently good or bad. Wealthy people are not inherently good or bad.
Money is an amplifier of consciousness, a kind of mirror. It reflects back to us what we’re doing and not doing, consciously and unconsciously; how we’re showing up in the world. More money is obviously not better. The way we feel about the money that we have, how aligned and resonant we feel about how we bring it in and how we spend it – shows us our level of consciousness, our level of personal power and how much we feel in charge of our lives. It shows us our capacity to receive, and our capacity to give.
I don’t actually teach my clients how to bring in more money. I teach them to get conscious about how they’re relating to money, and line up their vision and desire with their fully formed reality. I use money as an empowerment and transformational tool. If you are afraid of wealth, ask yourself why? What exactly is the fear, the thing you think will happen to you if you become rich? Write it down. Explore what’s underneath, what’s really going on there, and use that insight to make a conscious choice. Trust yourself.
SDS: How did 7 figures change your life, if at all? Plus what did making 7 figures feel like in your mind and body?
JJ: Materially, I get to look at the Pacific Ocean from my desk, my couch and my bed all day, every single day. I fly first class everywhere I go. I always book suites when I stay at hotels. I invest in my wardrobe and have a stylist to guide me in looking like my brand. I hire the best coaches and spend a ton on my team and taxes. All of this is a direct result of the money I earn. I wouldn’t be able to do any of what I’m doing with less income.
Deeper than that, learning to make money on my terms has changed how I move through my life – it’s been a powerful spiritual tool. In setting ambitious financial goals for myself, I’ve challenged my own understanding of what I’m capable of, what I’m worthy of, how to have faith in myself and in God, along with how to collaborate with that divine energy.
The inner work around my own mindset and my own consciousness around how I show up in the world is deep. I see the money that I earn as a reflection of that inner work, as well as my capacity to help people. I’m here to make even more – multiple 7 figures, then 8! The more money that I can move through the world, the more people I can help.
The actual experience of my first 6-figure month and my first 7-figure year were surprisingly anticlimactic. The big work and the big celebrations happened along the way. When those markers came, they felt like an affirmation of something that had already changed. A marker like that I had done the thing I said I would do. Seeing the numbers in black and white helped me measure my progress and see myself in my own growth – but the growth had already happened. It’s like measuring your height on the door when you’re a kid. The actual marking isn’t where the growth happens, it just measures the growth. My financial achievements have been the same.
SDS: What is one piece of advice you wish you had learned at the beginning of your career? For those on the journey to wealth and greatness both personally and in business, do you have any habits you recommend to add into our lives?
JJ: If I could go back in time and whisper sweet nothings in my own ear, I would tell myself a couple of things:
- It’s all going to be great. Don’t worry.
- You’re going to do it. Don’t worry.
- It’s okay to trust yourself.
- It’s okay to make mistakes – in fact they’re inevitable and you’re going to make a bunch of them and after the fact, you’ll be more grateful for those so called mistakes. They won’t feel like mistakes in the end, but necessary chapters in your learning.
The biggest thing that I deeply know now that I really didn’t understand before:
- Everything is happening for your benefit.
- Everything is happening as part of your personal curriculum.
- When you look back, you won’t change a thing. There’s nothing that you will trade, nothing that you would give up.
I know now how to claim ease. I know how to prioritize love. I know how to live in the state of meditation more and more continuously. Note: I am not perfect, but I am so much more embodied in my consciousness practice because of my business and because of my work around money. I’m so grateful for that.
I’m grateful every day. If I could only recommend one practice, that’d be the one: gratitude. Be grateful for all you’ve lived up until now, even if you weren’t grateful while it was happening. Be grateful for the things in your life right now and be grateful for what’s coming.
Here’s mine:
I’m so happy and grateful for the life that I am stepping into next. I’m so happy and grateful for my beloved and the life that we’re living, the bunnies that we’re raising, the new homes that we’re moving into and the new views and adventures that we’re having. I’m so happy and grateful for all the clients that are coming and their brilliant, impactful service oriented businesses that are literally healing the world. I’m so happy and grateful for the money that’s coming to me. For the love and connection I experience with God every day. Yes, yes, yes!
Practice this kind of gratitude until the things that have happened, the things that are happening and the things that will happen are indistinguishable, until you can’t even feel the difference energetically or emotionally – the quality of your gratitude is the same.
That’s the medicine. That’s the sweet spot.
Then live in that way. Take action in that way. Make sales calls in that way. Step all the way in unapologetically, do you. And be grateful for every moment.
