After a study abroad trip that changed her life, Michelle Blue became an entrepreneur shortly after college graduation. What started off as creating a non-profit organization has evolved into guiding other entrepreneurs on their journey, through sharing stories and learnings with her audience. Learn more about what it takes to Journey with Blue.
SDS: What inspired your company The Journey with Blue?
MICHELLE BLUE: It’s inspired by a study abroad trip to Ghana that I went on in college. Two weeks after graduation, I started my first business Bené, a luxury scarf collection committed to providing tuition, books, supplies and uniforms for girls in Ghana to continue their education.
When I started my business, entrepreneurship was not the “it” thing to do – but over time, it became more popular on social media. I saw that many up-and-coming entrepreneurs were busy showing their successes, their new cars and all the “sexy” parts of entrepreneurship. But, no one was sharing the lessons, sacrifices, failures and joys that I was experiencing along the journey.
So, I felt that there was a need to create a space to share the transparent stories encouraging fellow millennial entrepreneurs and hopeful entrepreneurs alike. The Journey with Blue was brought to life.
SDS: What have been your biggest challenges as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome it? How have those challenges impacted where you are today?
MB: As I was growing my first business Bené, there were so many lessons, failures and challenges along the ‘Journey’. On season three’s episode with Brandice Daniel, I share how I went through a $40,000 loss in my business. I had gotten to the point where I thought I wouldn’t be able to continue my ‘Journey’ and I wouldn’t be able to stomach another leap in bringing my dreams to life. I’m not going to lie, it took time to get over it; a $40,000 loss was definitely a blow financially and to my ego – but one thing I learned was that I couldn’t let this failure define me.
Since then, I have launched The Journey with Blue, a talk show and coaching community supporting other women along the ‘Journey’ in creating the life and business of their dreams. Everyone fails and if you’re not failing, you’re not doing something right…so fail BIG!
SDS: You’re also a business coach for female entrepreneurs, what is your area of expertise?
MB: On my show, The Journey with Blue, I lead conscious conversations and coach women around the spiritual mindset and success principles needed to help create the life and business of your dreams.
Through my coaching program, Taking the Leap with Blue, I support women who already have a business idea, get out of their head, gain clarity and get the confidence needed to take the leap and make their dreams a reality. I love coaching others to step into their full potential. It allows me to integrate the knowledge I have as a trained coach and give everything I wish I had when I was a beginner entrepreneur.
SDS: As a talk show host, you’ve had the opportunity to have conversations with so many fantastic guests. What’s your favorite part about asking questions and who is your dream guest?
MB: I am so excited to be launching the third season of the show September 2021, featuring phenomenal entrepreneurs such as Danielle Leslie, founder of Course from Scratch, Brandice Daniel, founder of Harlem’s Fashion Row, Renae Bluitt, creator of She Did That Film on Netflix and many more.
Each of the conversations are a masterclass to helping you step into your full potential and is true transformational work supporting you along every step of the ‘Journey’. I am constantly applying the information that was shared in these conversations in my own life and business and I am thankful that other women will be able to do the same.
One of my dream guests is Elaine Welteroth. Her book More Than Enough is so powerful and is such a transformational message that we all need to hear more about.
SDS: How can individuals learn more about you, as well as all of your amazing offerings?
MB: I look forward to supporting the women of Six Degrees Society along their ‘Journey’ in creating the life and business of their dreams. I can be found on Instagram @themichelleblue, www.thejourneywithblue.com and make sure you don’t miss out on the launch of The Journey with Blue, Season 3.
